September 01, 2025
Important Notice: Support for Windows 10 by Microsoft ends on October 14, 2025. Although your Windows 10 PC will continue to function beyond this date, Microsoft will cease providing critical services such as security updates and technical assistance that keep your system secure and reliable.
Why Should Business Owners Act Now?
- Heightened Security Threats: Without ongoing updates, your computer becomes increasingly vulnerable to viruses, malware, and cyberattacks, jeopardizing your vital business data. Upgrading to a newer Windows version is essential to safeguard your operations.
- Software Compatibility Concerns: Many applications are optimized for the latest operating systems. Post-Windows 10 support, some software may malfunction or stop working entirely, disrupting your workflow.
- Regulatory Compliance Risks: If your business handles sensitive data or operates under strict regulations, running an outdated OS could lead to compliance violations, resulting in fines or legal complications.
What Are Your Upgrade Choices?
Microsoft recommends upgrading to the newest Windows version before support ends. However, not all Windows 10 PCs meet the hardware requirements for Windows 11, and attempting to upgrade incompatible devices will trigger error messages.
If your current PC isn't compatible with Windows 11, consider these options:
- Purchase a new PC that supports Windows 11
- Enroll in Extended Security Updates (ESU) for temporary protection
- Switch to a Linux operating system as an alternative
- Continue using Windows 10 without updates (not recommended due to risks)
Before proceeding with any upgrade or change, always back up your important data to prevent loss during the transition.
Extended Security Updates (ESU) for Windows 10
If upgrading immediately isn't feasible, you can opt for Microsoft's Extended Security Updates program. Keep in mind, ESU is a temporary fix, available only for one year after October 14, 2025.
Registering for ESU is straightforward: pay a $30 fee or redeem 1,000 Microsoft Reward points. Alternatively, you can use the free option by enabling Windows Backup to sync your settings and files to OneDrive. Note that OneDrive offers 5 GB of free storage, so additional space might be necessary for large backups.
Don't delay—registration for ESU must be completed before the October 14 deadline to qualify.
